A versatile dog is bred to do it all: find and point upland birds, retrieve ducks from open water, and track wounded game. That range is the reason hunters choose breeds like the Pudelpointer, German Wirehaired Pointer, Drahthaar, and Small Munsterlander. It’s also why they need a training program that develops every skill, not just one.

As Pudelpointer breeders and hunters, versatile dogs are what we know best at Granite Ledge Kennels. Our versatile program brings upland, water, and tracking work together on 180 acres of fields, cover, and training ponds near Foreston, Minnesota.

One Dog, Every Season

In Minnesota, a versatile dog can hunt grouse and woodcock in September, ducks in October, pheasants into December, and help recover a deer in between. Our training is built around that full calendar, so your dog is ready for whatever the day brings.

What the Program Covers

Field search and pointing. A purposeful, ground-covering search that stays in touch with the handler, and a solid point on live birds. Learn more about this work on our upland bird dog training page.

Steadiness. Steady to wing and shot, with the dog holding its point through the flush and the shot until released.

Retrieving on land and water. A reliable retrieve to hand, blind and marked retrieves, and duck searches in cover where birds hide.

Tracking. Following a drag or a blood trail to wounded game. Versatile breeds often carry strong tracking instinct, and we put it to work, including blood trail tracking for deer recovery.

Obedience and cooperation. A versatile dog does many jobs, so it must be easy to handle. Obedience runs through every stage of the program.

Training That Fits Your Dog

Versatile dogs mature at different rates, and most are stronger in some areas than others. One dog may be a natural in water but need work on its search. Another may point beautifully but need confidence on the retrieve. We start with an evaluation, then build a plan that develops each skill in the right order for your dog.

Many hunters with versatile breeds also want to test their dogs. If you have a test in mind, tell us during your consultation so we can plan around it.

Starting Young

The foundation for versatile work begins early, with birds, water, gunfire, and scent. Our puppy training program builds that desire and confidence before formal versatile training begins.

Taking Your Dog Home

Before your dog goes home, Chris walks you through the commands and techniques used, so the training carries over to your own handling.

Dogs must be current on vaccinations, including Bordetella. Please bring a complete shot record at drop-off.
